Creativity in Education
Aristotle Founds the Lyceum
Aristotle came back to Athens in 335 B.C., and spent the next twelve years running his own version of an academy, which was called the Lyceum, named after the place in Athens where it was located, an old temple of Apollo. (Click on photo for more information. It will open a new window.)

Promoting Creativity Through Mental Health and Positive Social Change."By 2020, over 70 million baby boomers will retire and only 40 million people will be qualified to take their place.* How is this possible? It’s partly due to the American educational system’s failure to recognize and develop the talents of thousands of nontraditional students. Stay-at-home moms. Full-time workers. Late bloomers. All people with talent." Kaplan University Did you know that English is NOT the Official Language in The United States of America? We are undeclared and only 28 States have "English" as the official language in their State's Constitution. Declaring an official language in the U.S.A. is hotly debated. In my opinion, we are in fact, a Bilingual Nation English/Spanish whether it's officially declared or not.
The Truth About College Rankings
Does our American school system really want creative students? The debate is on... Perhaps, due to the Recession, over crowding, crime, and overall cut backs creativity is not plausible or applicable within the Public School system. Unless a student is exposed to an exceptionally gifted creative teacher that exposes his or her kids to creativity (on her own dime and perhaps in secret) everyone is out of luck. Teachers are heroes. The teachers that I know personally all spend money on their kids out of their own pockets. We know that teachers are not paid what they deserve in this country. Never blame a teacher. Most are in the teaching field because they love kids and wanted to share knowledge. Other teachers may become stagnant, abusive, and uncooperative because they are simply burnt out. The truth is that America (in general) is suffering in part from the lack of creative company Presidents and employees. Especially as we turn from an information age to a green and informational management age. It appears that creativity including, the arts, literature, music, humanities, dance, and other related activities are things that must be discovered and mastered through outlets other than the traditional American school systems. The very classes that promote creativity are not available in the schools. The worst part is that too many children cannot afford exposure to outlets outside of the Public School system. By the time a kid may be exposed to such things in high-school or college they have built a wall of fear against these courses. Albeit, through the advancement of Technology and the "Call to Change" set forth by the Obama administration... And loan forgiveness plans in place to support education... I would say that Creative people are going to become very much in demand whether they are writers, actors, scientists, Doctors, and other scholars and artists. Whether your child is struggling (for whatever reason) and simply can't make classes consistently...Today there is no need to forgo school or creativity. A Touch of Greatness(2004) NRWhen he became a teacher in the 1940s, Albert Cullum realized something was lacking in his classes and decided to stray from the by-the-book, discipline-heavy style favored by his colleagues, instead using poetry and drama to put life and emotion into his teaching. This documentary from Leslie Sullivan (produced by Catherine Gund) depicts a man who challenged traditional teaching methods and proved that creativity has a place in every classroom. Personal StoryWe are long time friends of a wonderful father that ended up losing his house, company and income through a divorce. The wife didn't want to take care of their son. The father and son found themselves living in a car for too long. I believe for about 2 years. We offered them our shower but at the time we were renting a room ourselves and it wasn't allowed. Since then they have received public housing assistance and his son attends school online. The school gave him a free brand new lap top and he is earning straight A's. School is not always about studying and tests. If a student is suffering from bullying, illness, traumatic situations attending school consistently can become unbearable and unrealistic. I will add that the father was a high achiever with a modest home in Malibu, CA. Most Americans (that still have jobs) are one lay off, illness or divorce away from financial ruin and many do not even realize it. Sadly, many of us have discovered that it's true over the past decade. This father was able to share his creativity with his son. A parent can only share what he or she possesses. This father is very much into the creative healing arts and is a math wiz and a word smith. I watched this father and son as they would goat eat other on in creative games trying to outdo each other in difficult math problems and spelling. Even homeless in car creativity saved them and now they are fine. I'm sure that this boy will end up going to college and become successful. Hopefully within a much better economic economy. The following is re: Adult Education. Due to the Recession, job losses and changing employment needs many of us find ourselves returning to school in mid-life. I am one of them so I speak and share this information freely from the heart. Online Education may help you to obtain a degree while keeping your spouse, house, and close relationshipsI will share that my first HR position after graduation (from an online school) was $65K. I believe that "online education" is accepted today (for the most part) if you have the experience to back it up and can survive the actual work. Experience is usually the key to job survival, from my perspective. I think that the only time an "online" degree is not acceptable is when companies are going after graduates from "Top"schools. Top as in Ivy League. You either have an Ivy League degree or you don’t. However, I believe that there are plenty of companies seeking non Ivy League graduates because they cost less and can do the job. For most positions an Ivy League degree is "overkill" and too "costly." In today's "employer's" market a Doctorates Degree, in my opinion, is worth attaining no matter how it's earned. In fact, many companies (Including over seas) not only prefer "online" education but have partnerships with them so that employees can benefit "off" the clock. It's a win-win for companies and students. That being said, their are differences in Doctorates degrees. Ph.D. This degree is mainly desired in Science fields, Research, and Academia. I've read postings made my Ph.D. holders discuss that this degree scared off potential employers outside of these fields. Some feel that they are viewed as too analytical and too much in the head to actually produce. Some people refer to them as "Living in ivory towers." I've also heard from a Scientist at Merc that they will not even look at Ph.D. candidates unless they come from a top ranked school. This particular professional worked his way up in the company and is now earning a Ph.D. through Walden. In this case, he claims, that it's icing on the cake...But if you are a student going straight through from Masters to Ph.D. without much experience an online degree probably won't cut it. Newer Doctorate Degrees consist of "Applied" Doctorates Degree: These degrees imply that you have work experience and that you know how to do the job. These include but are not limited to: EdD: Educational Doctorates PsyD: Psychology Doctorates DBA: Doctorates of Business Administration. The new DBH: Doctor of Behavioral Health from Arizona State University. A bit more about the new DBH. We attract a lot of students to this site and receive questions regarding the LCSW, MFT, and the LPC. Some students earn one distinction and then wonder if they should have earned another instead. In fact, I've read about some LPC going on to earn a new degree in social work. In my opinion, this is going sideways and it's very costly and time consuming. If you are in this position I highly recommend to check out: Arizona State University's new DBH program. This is an advanced Doctorates degree for all licensed counselors. This degree can be completed within 18 months and is available partially online. Check it out before paying for two licenses or two degrees that are so closely related but doesn't get you ahead.

Grants, Education Stimulus Bill, & Funding EducationOne of my fellow students commented on a post that she was pro Obama but upset because his new education incentives were for "mothers only" She explained that she was never able to have children and did not find this to be fair. I wanted to let every student (that stumbles upon this site) know that the "mothers only" is a marketing campaign created by online schools and online businesses. All businesses target mothers because they are normally home and need extra money. Get it? All Americans are included in the Education Bill Stimulus being created by President Obama and Joe Biden. I listened to the State of the Union Address and agree 100% that politicians are campaigning for upcoming elections and not helping Americans. The worst part is that it's depressing and confusing all of us in an already over burdened society. Stop the madness. Know the facts & Support the Education Bill by Obama and Biden. This is not about political camps or sides. This is about education, jobs, and saving this country. Research will show that America may no longer be the best country to live in and that's not acceptable for most Americans. We need to work, vote, and create greatness back into America. Fortunately, we are living in the most transparent government America has ever witnessed because of the vision of President Obama.
