COMMENT ON: "Which Is Better? The PhD, PsyD, or Masters?"

by Brooke
(BFE)

Well I'm seeing a Social Worker. She is considered a therapist or counselor. I feel my self that they are the best. My reason's for this is because I find them to be more down to earth! Not snotty at all since they have there big PHD!
But this is just my opinion and you know what they say about that!!!! ha ha ha!

I also feel as if you will get the same counseling that you would with someone who has spent years on getting there PHD. And you would pay more for that!

Hi Brooke:

Thanks for the posts and for being such a loyal visitor and contributor.

Yes, you're correct about social workers. They have great reputations as counselors. They get the most work in hospitals after psychologists, as far as mental health counselors go.

Additionally, insurance companies prefer master's level counselors because they do work for less money. I offer a sliding scale and some probono work in our crisis coaching and mediation business now, and will incorporate probono work and sliding scales after I earn the PhD.

I have relied on student counselors (All types) in the past because I could not afford sessions with psychologists let alone health insurance. I had some hit and misses with students, but was always grateful that they offered sliding scales and a friendly ear.

I would like to get my PhD because I do want to be as snooty as possible. Ha. Na, it's true that many PhD's are too much in their heads and can't relate to people. I have seen it and know exactly what you are talking about. Ha.

There used to be a great sitcom called "Frasier" on TV. They mocked the exact kind of psychologists that are referencing. It was one of my favorite shows. These are most likely your Ivy League grads and should probably stay in research and academia.

I don't think that I'll ever get like that (Assuming that I complete my PhD) because I have struggled so much in school and had a lot of trauma in my life that kept me down to earth. Since, I am obtaining my PhD later in life I will have been without it much longer than I will be with it. I think that it's a safe bet that I can be both a psychologist and down to earth.

If I start sounding snooty I'm sure that our readers will straighten me out, with my blessing.
I am glad that you are experiencing great work with your social worker. In fact, I have a MSW featured on the "Combat Conflict" page and the "Creative Careers" page-The Stress Doc. Show our site to your your Social Worker and let her or him know that we'd appreciate any contribution.

Keep reading and posting. I'm sure you have helped our readers with your insights. I love your sense of humor. I'm mostly Irish and I don't drink or start bar brawls... I'd much rather eat Italian food...Go figure. Ha.
