Creative Careers

The God of Poetry and Art - Which would be what we consider today as being a creator. For more information click on the photo. It will open in a new window.
Artistic people historically seek creative careers and unconventional jobs. The key in this economy is to also make sure that your creative career is or will be in demand for the next several years. I suggest checking with the Occupational Handbook online. Which is: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ Make sure it is the most recent version.
Note: Do not get fooled by media and school hype. Schools open up and start courses based on upcoming demand. Unfortunately, they tend to keep the hype going long after the occupation is no longer in demand because they still need to make money. This goes for all schools and Universities not just the private sector.
Lastly, much demand is based on projected growth that sometimes does not happen, especially in this crazy world. I am recommending to people that ask to not rule out working in other countries. If you are open to this idea you may find that demand is higher in a foreign country that is completely filled here. Of course, not everyone is willing or able to make such a commitment but if you are interested find a recruiter and check out the government web sites. I have known a few Americans that taught English in China for example and did very well not knowing much Mandarin.
While we're not all going to top the singing charts it is possible for some of us "everyday creators" to borrow ideas for creative careers.
"Those who hide their creativity are just like those who can't be creative." Bill Sheffield
WORK!
Sonja Lyubomirsky,Ed Diener and Laura King. "How of Happiness"
"The evidence, for example, demonstrates that people who have jobs distinguished by autonomy, meaning and variety - and who show superior performance, creativity, and productivity - are significantly happier than those who don't."
"Why does our work make us happy? Because it provides us a sense of identity, structure to our days, and important and meaningful life goals to pursue. Perhaps even more important, it furnishes us with close colleagues, friends and even marriage partners."
"The more successful we are at our jobs, the higher income we make, and the better work environment we have, the happier we will be.
This increased happiness will foster greater success, more money, and an improved work environment, which will further enhance happiness, and so on and so on and so on."

Creative People Have a Hard Time Surviving "Real" Jobs Albeit, they excel as CEO's and Presidents.Research has shown that creative people do have a harder time succeeding in conventional careers. Lucky for us, we know that there are a lot of creative ways to earn a living. You are NOT too Old or too Young!People just like you and me are realizing everyday that there is no such thing as job security. Creators are deciding that it's worth taking risks, acquiring new knowledge and counting the days until we can fire our boss. In fact, our current recession is prompting some us to get up off of our arses and create a career today. This is happening at any and all ages. Anything you do when done creatively produces a whole new dimension. Please enjoy meeting a few of our friends who have carved out creative businesses. Scroll down to view a list of creative careers. Xavier Smith Your Minister of DefenseCongrats to Xavier, he was recently chosen by Monster.com to motivate high-school students about college!!!! Xavier is a true light and fitness inspiration. I do not live in his area however, he has spoken with Bobby and me a few times and inspired me to start Curves. I've been a weight loss & gain yo-yo my entire life but lately that yo-yo has been flying high and not yoing back down. When Xavier calls he'll say, "Hey, I like to surprise folks once in a while and I'm just happy to be alive!" I've dropped 10 pounds since he started encouraging me (long distance) and I've been listening to his radio show. And yes, Xavier, I walk on my (bleepin) Gazelle while I listen to your show!;-))) He and his wife have overcome some life tragedies but it has only made them stronger. In fact, most of my friends mentioned below have suffered personal tragedies and defeats. It's almost a predetermined fact that conflict spurs creativity. I will not share their personal tragedies (because they might sue me) but will leave that up to them to share one day. Xavier decided to create his dream business in the very competitive world of fitness training. He created a unique niche and name within "defense training." He gives all the glory to God but I have to say you Rock Xavier! Just click below to discover the Minister of Defense! Btw, you can also start your own radio show for free. Check it out and tell Xavier that you discovered him here. Let us know if you get on his show. Bobby and I are on the list. Listen to Minister Of Defense on Blog Talk Radio Creative Corporate LivesOnly a few highly skilled employees are able to explore creativity on the job such as Google and Yahoo employees. Read their benefit packages. It's amazing! Ivy League graduates that become CEO's and Presidents are pretty much guaranteed creative latitude. Then theirs the rest of us! Becoming Self EmployedIn order to have a creative career most of us have to become self- employed. Business OwnersWhen I think of business owners (small or big) I think of people that love doing business. They don't really care what they are selling but just love the art of marketing and profiting. These folks can't wait to earn enough profit to hire sales people so that they can sit in their office and spin business. Self EmployedWhen I think of self employed people I think of creators that love doing their creative passion as a business. These people are much more likely to create services and information, offer unique items, or blend services with niche items. In other words, creators would much rather hire people do do the business part of work for them. They actually thrive on performing their services or publishing information about their passion. These are the "Everyday Creators" and have the advantage of being able to work- from- home if they so choose. As an example, I love working with kids affected by domestic violence and coaching. I would feel horrible and restless if I had to sit in an office doing business and outsource clients to other coaches. Even now we're researching software products and businesses that will run the business part for us so that we can spend our time coaching and writing. I will share as we discover them.

The Following is a List of Gathered Suggestions for Creative Careers:
For the creative mind you'll most likely have to work either alone or an environment that provides a flexible work structure.
Some of these ideas you will find creative and others you may think "yuck!" For example, I personally find math and statistics tough and not fun.
I have always just gotten through it somehow. However, if you read about mathematicians or watch the show "Numbers" you'll see exciting and creative ways in which math is used.
Peruse the list and try to keep an open mind. I believe that people gravitate towards what is in their creative soul.
Some of the ideas may require more school, talent, skills, or great gumption. We hope that they spur on your creative juices.
Asterisk means that the careers are also in demand for the next several years.
FYI -Again: If you are seeking a career and want to make sure
that it's in demand for the next 5 years I suggest double
checking with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. http://www.bls.gov

Anything can be creative if you do it creatively. (Unknown)
I would suggest looking for careers that you would be able to easily work as an Independent. My current goal is to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and incorporate behaviorism with the expressive arts. With the (BCBA) certification I can work as a counselor and/or consultant Independently. When I work for hospitals creativity may not be applicable however, it may support opening my own office where I can be fully creative. Look for this sort of ability as you choose your career.

*Teaching in general especially Science and Math. Albeit, this does not necessarily mean that creativity is allowed or applicable in American high-schools today.
Teaching includes but is not limited to instructing a yoga class, writing text books or self help books, teaching an online creative writing course from your home, tutoring online or individually, authoring a blog or even creating your own online radio show.
Creative teaching will not work if the student(s) and administration do not encourage it within the American Public School System.
*Teaching online. I am an advocate of online learning and online teaching. We now have k-12 funded by the government. Great alternative for some students and teachers.
